Icon Design Rules of the Road

Here at Atomicdust, we're doing more and more icon work: icons for apps, touch-icons for mobile websites and social media profiles for brands all require varying degrees of iconography. Just like any design specialty, icon design has rules and best practices, and following them can lead to a better designed, stronger brand. Read more about the Icon Design Rules of the Road.

Understanding Responsive Website Design. An Overview for Marketing Managers

We’ve been reading a lot about responsive website design on the web (it’s a very popular topic) and thought we would put together an overview for Marketing Managers that might have questions about the topic. What is responsive design? And why does it matter?

Naming, Branding and Website Design for Daugherty Mobile Suite

One project leads to another.

We were in the midst of a full-scale branding program for our new client, Daugherty Business Solutions, when they came to us with a more urgent task: branding their new, mobile-oriented products.

This in and of itself represented a seismic change for the company. Daugherty had always focused on long-term consultative client relationships, rather than individual products or services. Daugherty asked us to name these new products in a way that positioned them as an extension of the company’s experience and expertise, not as a separate entity or independent division.

In the competitive marketplace, names for mobile-focused divisions run the gamut from straightforward to esoteric. We decided to leverage Daugherty’s brand equity – they have a long history in the IT consulting space – and name the set of products the Daugherty Mobile Suite. It’s simple, descriptive and accurate, while giving the company the flexibility to add new products or functionality without rebranding.

A Designer’s Loosely Organized Thoughts on Adobe Photoshop Touch

As a Professional Designer Person, I'm contractually obliged to get excited when Adobe releases a new version of Photoshop. Early last week, the newest product to bear the Photoshop name was released to iPad 2's everywhere. After some fiddling, I've come away with a few initial impressions.

Atomicdust Nominated for Three ADDY Awards

It’s that time of year again, when the St. Louis Ad Club shares its love with local agencies and designers. No, not with Valentines, but with ADDY award nominations. Atomicdust earned three nominations for the coveted awards.

Our designers earned a nod for their wallpapers, which are posted each month to our blog. In addition, our web work for Yurbuds (which we made with our friends at Halski Studio) was nominated in two categories, once for the main website and again for the mobile, app-like version.

We’re thrilled to be recognized alongside so many talented companies, and look forward to toasting the winners at the awards show on Thursday, Feb. 16.

Atomicdust connects with the St. Louis AIGA to promote 2012 design show

A few months ago, we were thrilled to be asked by the St. Louis AIGA to help promote their annual design competition. This was a true honor for us, as we respect the AIGA and share their mission to celebrate great design. Of course, in agreeing to take on the project, it meant designing for an audience that lives and breathes design every day. No pressure.

Cool Designer Tool: The Cosmonaut Stylus from Studio Neat

I'm an iPad junkie (I know, it's a huge shock to you all). Moreover, I often use it to take notes, access my calendar, sketch out ideas, and generally hash out ideas while I'm at work. It's become my digital sketchbook, a device with unlimited potential for assisting me in fleshing out ideas.

For the past few weeks, I've been using Studio Neat's Cosmonaut stylus instead of my old Wal-Mart brand capacitive stylus. It's been a great experience, though not without quirks.
