February Marketing and Design Events around St. Louis

We believe the best way to support the social media, marketing and design community in St. Louis is to get more people involved. That’s why we’re proud to promote upcoming events, so as many people as possible know what’s going on. We truly enjoy bumping into folks at these events... so use this list to fill your calendar, come on out and meet us. (And be sure to scroll down to see events that will be held right here at our humble abode.)

Cool Designer Tool: The Cosmonaut Stylus from Studio Neat

I'm an iPad junkie (I know, it's a huge shock to you all). Moreover, I often use it to take notes, access my calendar, sketch out ideas, and generally hash out ideas while I'm at work. It's become my digital sketchbook, a device with unlimited potential for assisting me in fleshing out ideas.

For the past few weeks, I've been using Studio Neat's Cosmonaut stylus instead of my old Wal-Mart brand capacitive stylus. It's been a great experience, though not without quirks.

Atomicdust Faces Off Against Hunger

We don’t typically work late into the night. It’s not the most productive use of time. The mind tends to wander. And sometimes silliness occurs.

One late night, while waiting for a designer (Katie) to hurry up and finish working on something, we found ourselves huddled around her desk, right next to the photocopier.

Jesse scanned his face, rolled it as the light passed, creating this weirdly creepy, artsy print, which (of course) we instantly had to post on Facebook.

So then we all took turns, laughing and being creeped out by the results, and sharing (and grossing people out) on Facebook.

We wanted to share the experience, but how do you lure people into your office to scan their faces on a copier? Donate to a charity each time they do!

Atomicdust presents ‘Face Off Against Hunger’.

For every person that comes by our office, scans their face on the copier, and lets us post it on Facebook, we’ll donate $5 to St. Louis Food Outreach. Up to $5,000.

And in a couple months, we’ll buy some beer and host a ‘gallery show’ of all the faces we scanned in our office.

So stop by, have fun and help a great St. Louis charity!

And here's a link to the photos on Facebook.

Atomicdust wins ‘Best Designed Website’ at RFT’s Web Awards

Last night, we celebrated alongside some of the best of the web at the Riverfront Times 2012 St. Louis Web Awards - and we even took home a trophy of our own for Best Designed Website.

Here’s what the judges had to say:

“This site is seriously gorgeous with its sleek black-and-white layout and subtle flair. Atomicdust is also one of the few creative agencies that effectively harnesses the personalities of its employees and displays that energy online without being cheesy. For examples of that, just check out its frequently updated blog.”

Kind words, indeed. It may be cliché to say, but it truly was an honor just to be nominated, considering they chose from over 1,000 nominations from more than 400 readers.

And kudos to Atomicdust designer and photographer, Jason Stoff, as well. His personal site, Encor.es, won for Best Photostream/Flickr.

Check out RFT’s site for more on the winners and pictures from last night. And special thanks to Dan O’Saben for letting us use one of his images from the event for this blog post!

Online Ad Spending Outpaces Print, But Does it Matter?

Online advertising spending will surpass print in the United States for the first time in 2012, according to a forecast by eMarketer. As stated in this report, spending is set to increase twenty-three percent to $39.5 billion.

While I agree with David Hallerman, eMarketer's principal analyst, who says, “Advertisers' comfort level with integrated marketing is greater than ever,” I hope this surge doesn’t lead to more clutter and thus diluted messaging.

Messaging plays a critical role in the success of any ad campaign, online or otherwise. Read more about brand messaging's role in online advertising

Interaction is Branding

When someone mentions "branding," my guess is "interaction design" isn't the first thought that comes to mind.

In the increasingly always-connected mobile world we live in, it should be.

The way a user interacts with an app, website, or device has a profound impact on the emotional connection users form with their favorite brands. People love to be surprised and delighted - and paying careful attention to interaction decisions is a fantastic way to reinforce a brand experience. Read more about branding and interaction design.

We’re a Finalist for the RFT Web Awards

The Riverfront Times published it's list of finalists for the 2012 St. Louis Web Awards, and Atomicdust made the cut. The winners will be announced on January 24th, during a special event at the Old Rock House.

We were nominated for two categories this year, Best Use of Facebook to Promote a Business/Org and Best Designed Website. We would also like to give Jason Stoff, designer and photographer at Atomicdust, kudos for having his personal site, Encor.es, make the list as a finalist for the Best Photostream/Flickr category.

Midtown Alley Creative Firms Featured in The Post-Dispatch

We are officially settled into our new office at 3021 Locust. We've had an open house, a party for our clients and participated in the AdSaint Agency Crawl.  Everyone at Atomicdust appriciates the sense of community and comradery Midtown Alley offers for creative agencies and other businesses in the corridor between Grand and Jefferson.

And it seems the Post-Dispatch realized the neighborhood had something special going on as well. Midtown Alley made the front page of the business section and was praised as becoming, "to marketing in St. Louis what Tin Pan Alley was to songwriting in New York a hundred years ago."
