Field Tripping with Frank Lloyd Wright

Field Tripping with Frank Lloyd Wright

Every quarter, the team at Atomicdust goes on a field trip that is somewhat design related in order to broaden our horizons a bit. It’s a good thing, then, that St. Louis is full of wonderful, unique and inspiring places for our field trips.

For our most recent outing, we headed to the Frank Lloyd Wright designed Kraus House in Kirkwood for a tour. While admittedly no one at Atomicdust is an architect, we found Mr. Wright relatable for his struggle with pushing design thinking, convincing clients to believe in concepts, and really creating worlds for people to live in.

The tour was about 2 hours long, and included a nice video introduction about the project, the vision, the difficultly the owners faced in development, and the multiple threads of design theory that were used for the concept. We heard about client changes, budget constraints, compromise, and how the details of design can set the tone for a person’s experience.

It was refreshing to see similar challenges and solutions designers face, without it necessarily being about graphic design or marketing.

You can see more pictures from our little field trip on our Facebook page and if you want to learn more about the Frank Lloyd Wright Kraus House, or schedule a tour, visit their website. It’s set back in the woods of Ebsworth Park, near West County Mall, so you’ve probably driven by it unknowingly for years. It really is a great piece of design history, and St. Louis is lucky to have it.
