St. Louis Children’s Hospital

A colorful, crafty annual report from St. Louis Children’s Hospital challenged expectations, using stories and images to make data more meaningful.

Create the Scene

Early on, we decided on the concept of “more:” more lifesaving cures and treatments, more moments with loved ones, more exceptional patient care. Inspired by the hospital’s decor, the report pairs the comforting familiarity of children’s arts and crafts projects with sophisticated photography and design.

In-House Set Design and Photography

After sketching out and polishing individual scenes, we built and photographed each scene ourselves, converting our office into a photography studio that allowed us to swap out backdrops and suspend props from beams. Once the framework was ready, we handcrafted piles of paper butterflies, stars, hearts, kites and books that appeared to take flight. Even pie charts and graphs were made from construction paper.

A Printed and Digital Report

Reading preferences are changing, so we created an equally colorful interactive edition of the report for iBooks. This enabled the hospital to share the report with a larger audience through free distribution on their website and the iTunes store.
